"I wish I didn't have to go home. I wish I was someone else—someone with a future..."

For sixteen-year-old Nina Torres, it feels as if life is nothing but a dead end. Despised by her rich classmates and afraid that she'll become just like her drug-addicted mother, Nina's future seems to get dimmer every day.

There is one bright spot in her life though...

Sitting beside her one night, the only person in the world who cares about her makes a promise. No matter what happens—no matter how much Isaac's wealthy family disapproves—he and his girlfriend Nina will be together forever.

Fate plays a cruel trick on Nina, though, and a visit from Child Protective Services the next morning turns Nina Torres into Irene Hartley, a woman with a future but who will never see her beloved Isaac again.

Nine years later, a blind and incredibly handsome young entrepreneur hires Irene to be his personal assistant. Terrence Radcliffe reminds her so much of Isaac that she can hardly believe her eyes, and she's falling for him fast. Irene knows that fairy tales don't come true, but she allows herself one last wish. She wishes that she could finally say goodbye to Isaac and let herself take a chance on Terrence.

What she doesn't know is that Terrence is also searching for someone a shooting star who streaked through his life nine years ago, and he won't give up until he finds her...

Chasing Wishes is a powerful contemporary tale of lost love and wishes come true, recommended for ages 17+ due to adult content.

When I saw all of the good reviews for this novel, I picked it up quite quickly, expecting at least a halfway-decent romance. However, I wasn't even a fourth of the way through the book when I started to have difficulty going any further. This book was entirely unbelievable to me, in a lot of different ways.

First off: Terrance. A guy whose been blind for the past five years after suffering from a degenerative eye disease (as in, his vision didn't just disappear one night but gradually faded away). Despite this, Terrance doesn't know Braille. He doesn't know how to maneuver anywhere, even around his own house. Five years without sight, and when Irene asks him which way to his kitchen he is completely dumbfounded. He needs help walking up the stairs to his bedroom. Irene accidentally lets go of his arm in public for a moment and he is petrified with fear and has a sense of utter helplessness. He was supposed to have a guide dog, but apparently the guide dog he got was so worthless he doesn't bother using it (this is a dog that was supposedly taught by experienced trainers at the expense of a lot of time and money). And forget using a cane--that doesn't even factor into the equation.

Next off: Irene. Nice girl in general, but apparently she's as blind as Terrance, because even though he goes by a different name and has the same eyes as Isaac she convinces herself the two guys are different. I mean, it's only been five years--how could she possibly not recognize him? Also, what the author neglects to tell the reader is that throughout the whole book Irene is carrying a giant sign with her that reads "I am very poor, please pick on me!". This must be why everyone she walks by instantly knows that she's the poor girl (though she dresses normally) and should thusly be trodden upon. I can understand that there was a bad group of snobbish bullies at Irene's high school that picked on her--but the whole school, including the teachers? Really? The principal himself (who supposedly let Irene into the school in the first place) is so adamant that Irene, as a girl from the poor side of town, is the cause of all trouble in the school that he constantly gives her detention and threatens to kick her from the school. I have to wonder if the author really thinks that all private schools are like that.

I don't know how I read the same book as all the other reviewers who gave it such high praise--the book's actual romance, while cute, wasn't spectacular enough to make up for all the glaring annoyances. I made it about 70% of the way through the book before giving up, and I only kept reading past about 40% because I was hoping for a huge turnaround, for Irene to maybe convince Terrance to use a cane and gain some independence at least. And maybe she does do something like that in the last 25% or so of the book, but if she does then it happens entirely too late, at least for me.
